I’ve been carrying around a twenty euro bill in my wallet for about six months now, and every time I glimpse it, I smile because it’s still there! I haven’t spent it!
I’ve also been using Diner Dash (a restaurant game I’ve been playing since way back when) to practice having and holding money. My results have been… varied. I’ve set a limit for myself that I should have 10k in gold and 10 gems at any given time but sometimes I spend it all despite promising myself I wouldn’t. Often I’m barely scraping at the levels I promised myself, as you can see…
It’s surprisingly difficult to keep the limits even with fake money. The game has so many daily goals and offers that I find myself spending past the limits I’ve set myself. Setting a new zero doesn’t just happen instantaneously, but is a decisin you have to back up with daily reinforcement like any other.
I’m using the game to train myself to become accustomed to large sums of money (my plan is to raise the bar as I go) because we’re still flying by the seat of our pants irl. Living on one person’s salary is totally doable but doesn’t leave much wiggle room for anything else.
And I figured the most importnat thing to train here is my tolerance, and condition myself to not immediately spending any larger sums of money but to let them sit and wait instead. Maybe the next goal should be to save for those the cat ears headdress which is 50k in the game – and I might as well double that to 100k and work towards that.
The hardest thing so far is to stop falling into old habits and patterns around money. Because those things are sneaky!
