Out of 7 billion people on the planet, we found each other in a Yahoo! game room. You thought I was a guy because my handle was Devilish James (named after my hot water bottle cosy which was a little devil). And you struck up a conversation with me but ended walking me through the ins and outs of the platform instead.
And never did you try to charm me with vapid words or sleazy attempts like the rest of the idiots there. I don’t remember what we talked about that first night but I remember coming away from it with a sense that things would never be the same. I felt like the whole world had somehow shifted on its axis in those seven hours we’d spent chatting and playing games, and there was no going back.
And it was only months later that I found out you’d felt the same. That you’d gone up on the roof at dawn to smoke and decided that you needed to marry that girl. And since that, all these years, you’ve been here with me. Watched me grow from a shrunken and insecure thing to a stubbornly unapologetic bag of sass.
You’ve fought with me, cried with me, and been lost in life wiht me. Before I met you, I’d made a decision that I was gonna spend my life alone because relationships were messy and I was done with other people. Wihtout you there would be no me as I am today.
Because simply by your commitment to be present here I’ve been able to learn about myself. Because you’ve been that one constant in my life I’ve been able to learn trust – not just others but myself as well. You’ve pushed me to be better than I ever could have been alone. You’ve made things possible for me that I didn’t even think of in my wildest dreams. Thank you, skinny boy, with hair like a crows nest. Thank you.
