It’s made up of simple granny squares in purple, pink, fuchsia, red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, light blue and blue.
It’s joined together in white single crochet stitches and the border is made in white, with the same bobble stitch used in the rainbow pillow.
Materials you’ll need:
- crochet hook, size depends on the yarn you use (I used sock yarn with a 3.5mm hook)
- about half a skein of yarn per colour
- upholstery needle
This particular blanket is ENTER MEASUREMENTS, which is good as a lap blanket for an adult or a cosy blanket for a child.
You’ll need 12 squares in each colour (or however many you want for your blanket to be the right size).
Keep in mind that thickness of the yarn also affects the size of the squares, so if you want a specific size blanket I recommend making a gauge swatch in the yarn you’re going to work in and then calculating how many squares you’ll need.
After that, it’s just a question of getting all the squares crocheted!
Once you’ve made all your granny squares and have finished them by weaving in the ends, it’s time to start attaching them together.
To attach the granny squares to each other, I used a single crochet on the backside of the blanket.
In this instance, I used the same white yarn I used for the border and made a visible, raised joining.
First, I went lengthwise and then back over crosswise (as you can see in the image below, where I’ve begun coming back crosswise from the left edge).
Beware that this phase of making the blanket means you’ll often be sitting with the blanket in your lap (unless you’re working on a table), and it’s very possible a cat will want to come and enjoy the blanket as you work.
I was also working on this part of the blanket in the middle of summer, meaning I was hot a lot. I do not recommend!
This was a relatively small project, though, so I didn’t have to bake for too long under the blanket as I put it together.
Once all the squares are joined together, crochet all around the outermost edges with two rows of single crochet and finish with a row of bobble stitches.
1st row of edge (single crochet)
Pick a spot and pull up a loop, SC in every stitch, except for in corners.
In the corner, 6 SC into corner chain space.
When you come to the end of the row, slip stitch and chain two.
2nd row of edge (single crochet)
SC in every stitch, except for in corners. In the corner, SC 2 (first two of the 6 increasing stitches), chain 4, skip 2, SC 2.
How to do a bobble stitch
(all stitches for one bobble stitch are all worked in the same stitch.)
YO, insert hook into stitch and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 2 loops on your hook.
Repeat this 3 more times, until you have 5 loops on your hook. YO and pull through all 5 loops on your hook to create the puffy appearance!
Repeat as many times as it takes to go all the way around the edge of the blanket.
Do not increase in corners.
Slip stitch when you get all the way around, cut the yarn and weave in. Congratulations, you just finished a blanket!
