How to crochet a donut

These donuts are super flexible and you can make them in any size – from amigurumi to giant donuts!

To change the size of the donut you can do several things; change the size of the yarn, change the size of the crocheting hook and/or change the size of the starting chain.

I use donut projects as a way to use up leftover yarn, so what yarn I use varies.

This pattern is for the kind of donut shown in the picture (quite large).

Each donut is worked in two parts (pastry and frosting part) and is worked in the round, then joined together once both top and bottom are finished.

You’ll need:

  • 3.5mm crochet hook / US E
  • Any pastry coloured yarn (light or golden brown, colour A)
  • Any colour of your choice for the frosting (colour B)
  • Multicolour yarn for sprinkles (optional) – I save small pieces of scrap yarn for this
  • Upholstery needle
  • Polyester filling

Abbreviations

  • CH – chain
  • SC – single crochet
  • ST – stitch
  • STS – stitches
  • SLST – slip stitch
  • INC – increase, in this case work two single crochets in the same stitch

How to crochet the donut.

Make two identical pieces, one in each colour.

Start with a long tail and chain 30. Join to the first CH from the hook with a single crochet to make a ring.

  • Round 1: SC around (30)
  • Round 2: INC every 3rd st (40)
  • Round 3: INC every 4th st (50)
  • Round 4: INC every 5th st (60)
  • Round 5: INC every 6th st (70)
  • Round 6 – 7: SC around (70)
  • SLST and fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing (only on one of the pieces)

From round 6 onwards, if you feel like you need a puffier donut, you can always add another row of increases until it looks as desired.

How to assemble your donut.

Flip both pieces inside out.

Use the tail from the centre ring and use it to whipstitch both smaller, inner rings together. Secure with a knot and weave in the end.

Use the tail from the outer ring and begin whipstitching the outer rings together. Leave a hole for stuffing and fill the donut.

Keep distributing the stuffing as you fill to make sure you’re not over- or under-filling.

Sew the hole and weave in the tail.

Make the sprinkles by stitching different coloured yarn in an uneven pattern on top of the frosting side of the donut.

You can also make a swirl on top with a longer, thicker piece of yarn or some batting and secure it in place with some fabric glue.

To make a smaller donut, simply decrease the starting chain.

Start with a long tail and chain 15. Join to the first CH from the hook with a single crochet to make a ring.

  • Round 1: SC around (15)
  • Round 2: INC every 3rd st (20)
  • Round 3: INC every 4th st (25)
  • Round 4: INC every 5th st (30)
  • Round 5: INC every 6th st (35)
  • Round 6 – 7: SC around (35)
  • SLST and fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing (only on one of the pieces)
